Abstract

Managing human resources in today's dynamic environment is becoming more and more complex as well as important. This research study is conducted on one of the core activities of the human resource department. Irrespective of whether a particular company is small or big in size, companies do have a proper appraisal process in place. Wherever there are enough employees to do appraisal, this activity is followed in that company. Other than salary hike, performance appraisal has several objectives. It is also equally important that it is a periodic, transparent, motivating, effective, and an unbiased activity. It should not be a cause of disharmony amongst employees. In this research study, what all best practices are observed in industry with respect to performance appraisal is studied carefully. This is done so to improvise the appraisal procedure followed at one of the major IT companies in India- LARSEN AND TOUBRO INFOTECH. Like most big companies, L&T Infotech also has a well thought appraisal process to evaluate more than 11590 employees. To investigate any shortcomings, if any and further what all new steps could be incorporated into the current appraisal process, a thorough understanding of what other IT majors do, was crucial. During the initial phase of the study, assimilation of L&T InfoTech’s appraisal process was very important. This helped in giving the very first glimpse of how IT companies evaluate employees. Based on this, the rest of the study was carried out by strictly keeping in mind what practices are observed in L&T Infotech and what improvements it needs.

Introduction

Once the employee has been selected, trained and motivated, then he / she are appraised for his performance. Performance is the step where the management finds out how effective it has been at hiring and placing employee. If any problems are identified, steps are taken to communicate with the employees and to remedy them. A "Performance Appraisal" is a process of evaluation an employee's performance of a job and in terms of its requirements.
Performance Management is the process through which managers ensure those employee's activities outputs contributes to the organization's goal. This process requires knowing what activities are desired, observing whether they occur, and providing feedback, managers and employees meet expectations. In the course of providing feedback, managers and employees may identify performance and establish ways to resolve those problems. Performance Appraisal is an important part of performance management. In itself it is not Performance Management, but it is one of the ranges of tools that can be used to manage performance. Because it is most usually carried out by line Managers rather than HR Professionals, it is important that they understand their role in Performance Management and how performance appraisal contributes to the overall aims of Performance Management. But on the contrary with a systematic feedback system, the Manager can identify good and bad performers. Performance Appraisal can also be taken as one aspect of motivating applied in organization context. Job Performance is partially determined by the motivation to work hard. Performance Appraisal

Performance appraisal is the process of obtaining, analysis and record in information about the relative worth of an employee. The focus of the performance appraisal is measuring and improving the actual performance of the employee and also the future potential of the employee. Its aim is measure what an employee does. PAS should be instrumental in creating a positive and healthy climate in the organization that drives employees to give their best while enjoying doing so.

The HR policy and procedure of Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) provides the policies and procedures for managing and developing staff. It also provides guidelines Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) will use to administer these policies, with the correct procedure to follow. In fact the above few mentioned facts are one among the HR policies, time to time it will be necessary to modify and amend some sections of the policies and procedures, or to add new procedures L&T implemented the new performance method- robust system. From the survey results it’s evident that both the appraisee and appraisers expectation from Performance appraisal system are the same i.e. "Determination of Promotion or Transfer" and "Salary Administration and Benefits". Hence a single performance appraisal system can satisfy needs of both the Appraiser and appraise.
