Service Description:
My writing and editing experience spans some fourteen years. At the beginning of that time, I proofread, copyedited, edited, and wrote newsletter articles and brochures for a small advertising agency in Philadelphia. The agency’s clients included an arts university, an environmental research management firm, and a biomedical research institution. For the latter client, I interviewed scientists and wrote short (500–1000 word) articles about their research for the institute’s newsletters and annual reports aimed at potential donors. For the arts university, I wrote and edited brochures and viewbooks directed at informing and attracting potential students. For the environmental research firm, I distilled news reports and research touching on ecology and biology into short (150–250 word) items for the “News in Brief” section of their professional journal. I continued doing so on a freelance basis when I moved to Paris. During my three years in Paris, I also wrote book reviews and translated art historical and other articles from French to English. On returning to Philadelphia, I extended my editing abilities to the realm of public education. I reviewed and corrected books designed to help students (grades 3–10) improve their test-taking abilities. I have also written lessons and chapters of such books. Such work includes researching and writing reading passages at grade-level, reshaping out-of-copyright content to match intended reading-level, and formulating test questions that accurately reflect state standards and standardized test formats. I have written “How to Write” sections of English Language Arts textbooks for grades 3–6, and have edited other sections and subjects. My wife and I recently spent two years in Costa Rica, during which time I wrote a series of lessons on Latin American history for sixth-graders, and a book chapter on Georgia state government for eighth-graders. I also edited the print and online newsletter for the bilingual school of the community we lived in. The job involved knowledge of both English and Spanish grammar and style, as well as translation from one language to the other. I currently reside in Vancouver, where my wife is pursuing an MFA in playwriting.
