Newspaper reporter turned freelancer
Category: Writing / Editing / Translation
Description: FREELANCE
My primary areas of expertise are business, finance and real estate. I have handled viral marketing, social networking, and marketing copywriting duties for RiseSmart.com, a $100k+ job placement site. I have written SEO web content and blogs for Banks.com, Move.com, and Nielsen Business Media's MediaJobMarket.com. I have written press releases for Terminix, Merry Maids, and CondeNastStore.com. Several national trade magazines have featured my articles, and I have edited copy for magazines and book authors. I can also ghostwrite or write media kits, business documents, and sales copy, and am skilled with Adobe InDesign, Quark Xpress, MS Office, and Photoshop. Client reviews are available on this site, and references are available upon request.

ADVERTISING
A year-long stint in direct advertising sales increased familiarity with the psychology of the sale, ROI, the WIIFM factor, etc. Ongoing training courses throughout that year covered the principles of writing effective advertising copy and strong ad design.

NEWSPAPERS
I am a former newspaper reporter of five years who focused primarily on daily crime and courts coverage. I covered everything from President Bush to Barnum and Bailey's while working in newspapers, and some clips are viewable on this site. I worked two years as managing editor of my college newspaper, overseeing a staff of about 20 writers and editors and guiding the newspaper to win several awards for design and content. I simultaneously worked for a community weekly, where I handled prep sports, news, photography and copy editing. At the Bowling Green Daily News, I earned a Kentucky Press Association award for extensive reporting on a capital murder trial. In Bowling Green, I covered federal- and state-level trials, interviewed a wide range of sources, and also handled a few investigative pieces. The newspaper helped hone research, fact-checking, interviewing and deadline skills.

SUMMARY
Altogether, I have eight years of experience writing for a living, whether in newspapers, freelance, or both simultaneously.  I have a firm understanding of objective and persuasive writing, copy editing, proofreading, interviewing, researching, and fact-checking.  I am a very diverse freelancer who enjoys a challenge and would love to help you with your next project.

Great Writer, Fantastic Editor!
Category: Writing / Editing / Translation
Description: I am a detail-oriented person with a creative streak and a lot of experience in writing of all sorts, both technical and non-technical.  I did the first two years of my Bachelor's degree at a liberal arts school (University of Puget Sound) where I made the most of all of my language and writing classes before I transferred and started my engineering degree.

I spent three months writing articles for Concrete Construction Magazine during the summer before I graduated with my Bachelor's degree.  That was a lot of fun and my article on concrete fencing was one of their most requested reprints!

I worked as a writing consultant for the College of Engineering and Mines at the University of Arizona while getting my Master's degree in Structural Engineering.  As such, I worked with writers of several different nationalities as well as with native English speakers to help them with any type of writing they were struggling with.  One thing I am especially good at is translating technical journal-speak into something that is readable by a person of average intelligence outside the particular field.

After grad school, I worked for a (very) small structural engineering firm in New York City that specialized in renovation, restoration, and rehabilitation.  As it was such a small firm, everyone there had to be proficient in all duties, including writing proposals and reports.

After I moved back to Arizona and before I got married, I worked in a slightly larger consulting engineering office. Again, one of my responsibilities was writing proposals.  Approximately 90% of the proposals I wrote either got my company the project or at least got us short-listed.

In the nooks and crannies when I haven't been going to school or working, I have done 20 years of ballet, trained as a classical soprano, and travelled extensively.  I also really, really, really (my husband would add at least five more reallys) like to read.

Now I work for my local City government and really miss the opportunity to write and be creative on a daily basis.  I joined iFreelance not only to make some extra money, but to be able to do something I love - helping other people with words.

You wouldn't be exaggerating much if you said that I am passionate about editing.  Making sure that what the writer is attempting to say really comes through to the intended audience is very satisfying.  I also get a lot of pleasure from writing.  I would love to help you with just about any type of writing, editing, or proofreading project you may have.

I am much more visual and articulate in the vernacular than most engineers - definitely don't be thrown off by my background.  I like to think of myself as a translator, someone who can take complex subjects and make them readily understandable for a diverse audience.

Thank you for reading this far.  I look forward to working with you.

Description: I am a former trial attorney and a highly-skilled writer, with extensive experience writing and editing, along with a vast expanse of life experience, informing my approach to every project that I undertake.  I offer writing and editing services on any subject, in any format you desire, from entire websites down to short articles, and everything in-between.  I have spent more than 25 years writing creatively and persuasively as an attorney, writing as a journalist, writing as an editor, writing academically, and writing in a multitude of other situations.  Writing is what I do.

My education includes a B.A., summa cum laude, in Liberal Studies, (Kentucky State University, Whitney M. Young College of Leadership Studies, 1991) with a minor in Studio Art; and a Juris Doctor, cum laude (University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law, 1995).

My work experience has varied widely, including my work as a trial lawyer, as a trial commissioner (a sort of assistant judge), as a writer and researcher for a non-profit, environmental advocacy organization, and as a freelance researcher and writer.  After graduating from college, I taught college freshman Composition courses before I decided to go on to law school.  I have done everything from waiting tables to arguing before the state Supreme Court.

My life experience has been diverse as well.  I grew up in a government housing project in rural Kentucky, attending both college and law school on academic scholarships.  Once upon a time, after law school, I married a french man, and I lived in Paris for extended periods of time, traveling back and forth between France and Louisville.  I returned to rural Kentucky to help provide needed legal services to mostly poor people.  I have practiced privately both in a firm and solo, as a government employee, and as a guardian ad litem for children, and I have received awards for donated legal services.  Although I wrote voluminously as an attorney, I have always enjoyed freelance writing assignments, welcoming the change in pace and subject.

I use Microsoft Word for written work, and I am proficient with all manner of internet usage, research, and other resources.  I will write on any subject matter, perform quality research, and guarantee fast production of high-quality, detailed writing, produced in appropriate form.  I can easily adopt whatever tone is best suited to accomplish project goals, from informal & friendly to the most heavily footnoted academic research.

My deadlines are always met, period.  I value my clients, I cultivate return business, and I burn no bridges.  I will deal with you fairly and honestly, with open communication.

Currently, I work from home, where I am raising two beautiful boys, ages 1 and 3, and I am available for consultation by email or phone at all reasonable times.  Contact me today to learn how I can provide solutions to assist you with your writing needs.

making writing professional and fun to read
Category: Writing / Editing / Translation
Description: I offer top-quality writing and editing in a variety of different genres, ranging from dissertation to poetry. Professionalism, readability, acute understanding of audience, and flawless mechanics define my work, which is quite reasonably priced for such services, I must say.

Political, philosophical, sports, and the grind are some of the subjects on which I most enjoy writing, but I value the challenge of projects in any sort of field. The constant learning of new things is certainly one of the greatest fringe benefits of being a writer. Having worked in both PR and sales, and having studied both propaganda and rhetoric, I also pride myself on the ability to use my voice (and humor, if necessary) for persuasive efforts, as long as I'm promoting something I believe in.

I graduated from Utah State with a BA in English/creative writing, high honors, and a few minor publications already under my belt, including a short story, a major literary critical thesis, a personal essay, and a magazine article read by thousands.

In addition to my academic and creative work, I also spent eight semesters as a consultant in the USU Writing Center and as a rhetoric associate, tutoring students on content, organization, flow, voice, mechanics, and documentation. Upon graduation, I was hired by USU's public relations office, where I continue to work drafting promotions and advertisements for the university. The job also includes editing brochures and other marketing materials and communications, and writing a quarterly feature article for Utah State Magazine.

I also speak fluent Russian, if that helps. Can't hurt, right?

Some of my academic interests are 20th century American literature, linguistics, geography, history, political theory, and Russian everything, including literature, linguistics, geography, history, and political theory. I consider myself well-versed in each of those areas, with especial expertise in certain of them.

More than anything, I love the prospect of making important information accessible to the masses, and I'm excited to continue my education and further contribute to the dissemination of important art and knowledge to the world. And hey, I'm easy to work with. I love this stuff.
Skills: grammar, punctuation, mechanics, editing for content, creative writing, persuasive writing, MS Word, Russian-English translation, professionalism, easygoingness, flexibility
