Description: Looking for a writer?

Writing has been my bread and butter and my soul food for as long as I can remember. Early on in my career I gravitated toward the writing aspects of my work; as a political campaign manager to the speeches, newsletters and policy documents. From politics I changed path to small business entrepreneurial pursuits and again, it was the business plan, the written proposal and the advertising that proved to be my strength.

Need a professional?

Recognising the latter to be my truth, the past few years of my career have been spent transitioning from business ownership to communications employment, and in the past three years, formalising my natural talent and learned skills with writing and editing credentials.

So if it a passionate professional writer/editor you require look no further. My work ethic is excellent and my rates are reasonable.

About Me:

Infused with passion and informed by experience. That statement describes me, my writing and my work ethic.

The Experience:

My life journey has taken me from my home town in Toronto to my current home in New Zealand and I have made many, many stops along the way. It has been my privilege to come to know a variety of cultures and places intimately. These experiences are so rich in my memory and my heart; they are particular favourites for me to write about or to utilise for places in which to set my scenes.

The Passion:

I have never baulked at a challenge and I am open to new technologies and ideas. In the early days of digital photography (1990's weren't really that long ago!), Southern Skies magazine had this to say about me, "... as forward thinking business people recognise the advantages of the new medium. In Taupo, Helga Sonier of Frantic Digital Adventure Evidence, mounts a Kodak under the wing of the Taupo Tandem Skydive Plane to capture..."

And by the way, I did jump out of the aeroplane for the accompanying photo in the article.

You have found in me a writer who is enthusiastic about what she does no matter what the task. Your project will be infused with this passion because it cannot, for me, be otherwise. I have written everything from annual reports to non-profit appeals and creative writing. Every project has received the same unequivocal excellence.

Use Me!

I invite you to utilise my business, political, family, travel, entrepreneurial and philanthropic experiences to have your project written in a knowledgeable and contemporary voice.

I thank you for your consideration and interest.

Helga Sonier.

Description: FREELANCE
My primary areas of expertise are business, finance and real estate. I have handled viral marketing, social networking, and marketing copywriting duties for RiseSmart.com, a $100k+ job placement site. I have written SEO web content and blogs for Banks.com, Move.com, and Nielsen Business Media's MediaJobMarket.com. I have written press releases for Terminix, Merry Maids, and CondeNastStore.com. Several national trade magazines have featured my articles, and I have edited copy for magazines and book authors. I can also ghostwrite or write media kits, business documents, and sales copy, and am skilled with Adobe InDesign, Quark Xpress, MS Office, and Photoshop. Client reviews are available on this site, and references are available upon request.

ADVERTISING
A year-long stint in direct advertising sales increased familiarity with the psychology of the sale, ROI, the WIIFM factor, etc. Ongoing training courses throughout that year covered the principles of writing effective advertising copy and strong ad design.

NEWSPAPERS
I am a former newspaper reporter of five years who focused primarily on daily crime and courts coverage. I covered everything from President Bush to Barnum and Bailey's while working in newspapers, and some clips are viewable on this site. I worked two years as managing editor of my college newspaper, overseeing a staff of about 20 writers and editors and guiding the newspaper to win several awards for design and content. I simultaneously worked for a community weekly, where I handled prep sports, news, photography and copy editing. At the Bowling Green Daily News, I earned a Kentucky Press Association award for extensive reporting on a capital murder trial. In Bowling Green, I covered federal- and state-level trials, interviewed a wide range of sources, and also handled a few investigative pieces. The newspaper helped hone research, fact-checking, interviewing and deadline skills.

SUMMARY
Altogether, I have eight years of experience writing for a living, whether in newspapers, freelance, or both simultaneously.  I have a firm understanding of objective and persuasive writing, copy editing, proofreading, interviewing, researching, and fact-checking.  I am a very diverse freelancer who enjoys a challenge and would love to help you with your next project.

Description: Just think of it. At this very moment, someone in our great big world has a fantastic business idea. It's the biggest thing since the Chia Pet. But because they're an idea person and not a writer, they can't effectively get the word out. Surely this is what happened to the Betamax VCR, the DeLorean car, and Crystal Pepsi.

That's where I come in. As a writer with eight years of experience across multiple formats--blogs, articles, websites, brochures, book reviews--I am ready to make words fly off the page with the greatest of ease.

Or perhaps you don't have a new business idea, and just need some copy written. That's okay, too.

While I enjoy the solitary nature of research, writing, and editing, I also truly enjoy working with clients. I consider my job one of customer service, and I strive to ensure that clients are completely satisfied with the quality and timeliness of the delivered product.

I have a BA in Writing and Art History/Criticism from UC San Diego and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maryland. I live in sunny San Diego with my husband and our dog, Louie.

Description: I am a detail-oriented person with a creative streak and a lot of experience in writing of all sorts, both technical and non-technical.  I did the first two years of my Bachelor's degree at a liberal arts school (University of Puget Sound) where I made the most of all of my language and writing classes before I transferred and started my engineering degree.

I spent three months writing articles for Concrete Construction Magazine during the summer before I graduated with my Bachelor's degree.  That was a lot of fun and my article on concrete fencing was one of their most requested reprints!

I worked as a writing consultant for the College of Engineering and Mines at the University of Arizona while getting my Master's degree in Structural Engineering.  As such, I worked with writers of several different nationalities as well as with native English speakers to help them with any type of writing they were struggling with.  One thing I am especially good at is translating technical journal-speak into something that is readable by a person of average intelligence outside the particular field.

After grad school, I worked for a (very) small structural engineering firm in New York City that specialized in renovation, restoration, and rehabilitation.  As it was such a small firm, everyone there had to be proficient in all duties, including writing proposals and reports.

After I moved back to Arizona and before I got married, I worked in a slightly larger consulting engineering office. Again, one of my responsibilities was writing proposals.  Approximately 90% of the proposals I wrote either got my company the project or at least got us short-listed.

In the nooks and crannies when I haven't been going to school or working, I have done 20 years of ballet, trained as a classical soprano, and travelled extensively.  I also really, really, really (my husband would add at least five more reallys) like to read.

Now I work for my local City government and really miss the opportunity to write and be creative on a daily basis.  I joined iFreelance not only to make some extra money, but to be able to do something I love - helping other people with words.

You wouldn't be exaggerating much if you said that I am passionate about editing.  Making sure that what the writer is attempting to say really comes through to the intended audience is very satisfying.  I also get a lot of pleasure from writing.  I would love to help you with just about any type of writing, editing, or proofreading project you may have.

I am much more visual and articulate in the vernacular than most engineers - definitely don't be thrown off by my background.  I like to think of myself as a translator, someone who can take complex subjects and make them readily understandable for a diverse audience.

Thank you for reading this far.  I look forward to working with you.
