Description:
Gavin offers his clients professional illustration and painting services at extremely competitive prices. He always achieves and tries to surpass client expectation and prides himself on meeting strict deadlines well in advance. He provides a friendly service and tries to build a close relationship with his clients so they can work together again in the future.
About Gavin:
Gavin eats, sleeps and breathes Art. He has always been very passionate and active in both Art and Design from a very early age. He is a creative thinker and his talents and interests lie in a variety of different fields. He can be labelled as an Illustrator, Artist, Graphic Designer and Architectural Designer.
After studying 'Art and Craft' and Graphic Design at 'A' Level, along with a variety of other subjects, he took his 'Art Foundation' at college. Gavin then went on to study Architecture at The University of Brighton (England). Here, he graduated with a 'Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree' (BA Hons) and his 'Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) - part one.
Architecture brought all of Gavin's talents together and helped fine tune his creative mind as an Artist and a Designer. It taught him a completely new way to view the physical and cultural world around him. It also helped expand his creative thinking in terms of understanding and designing spacial environments. This brought a new dimension to his artwork and introduced him to new graphic and drawing techniques using both hand and computer.
Gavin has always worked as a freelance Graphic Designer and Commission Artist in his spare time and has aquired a mixed array of clientel. He can work in a large variety of different media and likes to combine different techniques to achieve his desired goal. As you will no doubt be able to see from Gavin's portfolio, he is very universal in his style and can adapt to suit any brief, in both Art and Graphic Design, innovatively to assure client satisfaction.
Searching for adventure and new experiences, Gavin loves to travel. He has recently completed a one year journey circling the Globe with a 'round the world ticket'. Here, he picked up inspiration from all the countries in which he worked and visited. He hopes to portray this depth and rich texture in his work.

An Artist in Africa
Category:
Traditional Art (Illustration / Painting)
Description:
I am an Illustrator from South Africa with extensive experience illustrating children's books - with a particular specialization in African culture. My most recent series of projects has included illustrating books for Kindergarten, Elementary and High School texts as part of the Educational Upliftment Programs in Sub-Saharan African. These have mostly focused on Aids Awareness and Life Skills. I also have 7+ years experience in the Performing Arts, creating sets and stage props.
One of my more challenging projects was spending 1 month in the Central Kalahari Desert working with Dr. Carlos Valiente Noailles on his book about the indigenous San ("Bushmen") people. He required pen and ink sketches of the San people in their natural setting including work and social activities. As a result of this experience I held a successful Exhibition of portraits of the Bushmen.
All the illustrations I have done up to now have not been computer enhanced at all. I prefer to do any illustrations by hand as I find they tend to have more character and liveliness. The majority of the architectural paintings have been done on site. Saying this, it is not always easy, weather and interested onlookers doing their bit to disrupt concentration, but I find the artwork is always far more spontaneous and free.
Most of my research has been done through libraries as well as my fairly large reference ' collection '. These piles of books, magazines and cuttings should be more organised, scanned and filed and I have good intentions to get there someday and somehow it's worked up till now ! The internet can be wonderful but my old books are my friends and there are many things you'll never find on the www.
I have had two solo exhibitions and recently had a joint exhibition with three other artists. As the paintings are detailed architectural renderings done on site they are considered historically accurate will be of value in years to come, Simon's town being one of the first harbors used by seamen of old.
There have been a number of recent commissions to do much loved pets, a few portraits of children and I have also done a few paintings of houses and some interiors of houses where people were moving on and wanted a more personal memory of their home. One challenging project was doing 17 portraits in soft pastels of past and present golf captains at Clovelly Country Club.
I have recently completed two baby board book with an African theme in conjunction with a well known South African author. These will be launched at an international book fair in Cape Town in June 2008. They will be translated into four African languages..
Not all the samples in my portfolio are show on the screenshow. To view these click on portfolio and show all images. Hope you like them.

This is the back cover of the book I illustrated about the capture and treatment of one of the endangered African Wild Dogs of Madikwe. [Medium=pen, watercolor, pencil crayon]
The Mosque Alfred Lane Simon's Town South Africa
This is a pen, ink and wash painting of the mosque in Simon's Town as it was almost twenty years ago, done on site. If you go to Frank's Hairdressers, in the lane around midday, you may find your haircut interrupted as Frank will suddenly down his scissors and go off to prayers in the mosque at the top of the lane. No one minds as he always comes back and carries on with the cut and the customers use the time to chat about happenings in the village.
Leopard
An unfinished sample of a leopard about to attack. Pencil. fine ink line and white highlights. This is a commission for a book on African animals.
On a construction site
Supervisor on a construction site. An illustration from the book on building your own home. There is a program in place in South Africa where a government allowance is given to previously disadvantaged people in order to assist them in building their own homes.
Pushing the stroller
Another illustration from one of the baby board books being released in June 2008. The work was done in acrylic inks, pen and colored pencils.
