Description: Cultural Information Leaflets

The Project:  To produce a series of leaflets for students coming to study in the England.  Each leaflet is designed to highlight where English culture varies from the student’s own culture.  The leaflets cover everything from shaking hands to how people respond to life in general.

The Researcher:  You will need to be a person who has lived with both a native English family in England and with a native family in the target country, and is deeply familiar with both cultures.  As such, it is assumed that research will be minimal to zero, and that the task will draw on knowledge already acquired.

The Task:  Your task is to list and describe the differences between the two cultures.  The final leaflet will be written by me, and will also form part of other information packages within the education provision.  So, there is no need to do more than factual reporting.

The types of area to be covered will include the following, but the list is by no means exhaustive.  It is essential to focus on all aspects of culture, especially those that might cause confusion, conflict or embarrassment to the traveller or someone in England.  Nothing should be left uncovered.

Initial meeting
Conversation topics
National quirks (the value of keeping “face”, how long a handshake should be etc.)
Space, (how close you normally stand to a person when talking)
Touch (children, friends, strangers … when if ever, how)
Attitude to pets, children, members of the opposite sex
Dress codes (home, work, etc)
Daily timetable (when get up, have meals, go out, go to bed)
Typical meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, other)
Alcohol consumption (in the home, out, ref driving etc)
Hygiene
Body behaviour (all forms, especially hand and arm signals)
Illness
Homosexuality
Queuing
Bathrooms (use of bath/toilet, toilet paper, bidet, showers etc)
Taboos (what is normal back home, but would cause problems in England)
Things that happen only back home, not in England or even anywhere else (pantomime, for example,
is quintessentially English … outside England, most confuse the word with mime)
Areas of possible confusion
Areas of likely misunderstanding (of gesture, phrase, noise)
Areas of possible conflict
What might cause embarrassment (to the student, the host family, an adult, a child)

Description: Micro-Business for HighSchoolers is a course directed initially towards 9th grade home schoolers.  In the first 2 Month-Units, there are up to thirty pages (out of 120) slotted towards records, business math, handling your money, dealing with taxes, liability and laws, research and business skills, and an introduction to bookkeeping/accounting.  The exact topic for each page has been designated and the writer of these pages will be able to view the surrounding pages while shaping his or her own writing.  However, there are four blocks of 2 pages each designated for an introduction to bookkeeping, I will need the successful bidder to help me lay out what should go in those pages.  

I need someone who has training and experience in accounting/business math coupled with the ability to break it down and make it fun and simple for a fourteen year old kid starting his or her own business.  I am offering $16 a page for a total of $480 for the 30 pages.  I will pay in four installments of $120 each as the work is completed.  I would like the 30 pages finished by the end of September, if possible, but I will need several pages to come to me at a time through the month, with the first 11 due by Sept. 15, if possible.  I will have the successful bidder sign a non-disclosure contract.  There will be a set of expectations for the writing included with the project.
